If you’ve been riding trails around Hanoi or anywhere in Vietnam, you know how easy it is to get stuck in tricky spots — especially on steep hills or uneven terrain. Sometimes your front wheel gets stuck up on a hill while your rear wheel is trapped below, and you lose all your momentum. What do you do next?

At Dirt Bike Academy Vietnam, we teach a simple but effective method called the unstuck technique to get you moving again safely and without damaging your bike or yourself.

What Happens When You Get Stuck?

Imagine you’re climbing a hill, and suddenly you lose speed and stall. Your front wheel is high on the hill, and your rear wheel is stuck on lower ground. The bike might even tip backward, leaving you stuck and frustrated.

Step 1: Use Gravity to Your Advantage

Don’t fight gravity by staying upright or vertical — this will only make it harder to move. Instead, gently drag the front wheel down the hill to get the bike into a more favorable angle.

Step 2: Get in Neutral and Start Your Bike

Make sure your bike is in neutral before restarting. Starting the bike while stalled is the first step toward regaining control.

Step 3: Position Your Body and Feet Correctly

  • Get on the balls of your feet on the foot pegs

  • Lean slightly backwards to ensure traction on the rear wheel

  • This position helps keep the rear wheel pressed down for better grip

Step 4: The Clutch “Zap” and Body Drive

Here’s the key move:

  • Zap the clutch to deliver power from the engine to the rear wheel

  • Drive your body forward simultaneously to add momentum and balance

This dual force does two things:

  1. It prevents you from flipping backward and falling off the bike

  2. It puts pressure on the front wheel, helping propel you forward and out of the stuck position

Step 5: Try It Smoothly

With practice, this move becomes instinctive. The goal is to smoothly combine the engine power with your body momentum to get the bike unstuck — no drama, no crashes.

Why This Technique Matters

The unstuck technique is essential for anyone riding off-road in Vietnam, especially around Hanoi where hills and uneven trails are common. Learning to recover quickly and safely keeps you riding longer and reduces the risk of damage.
