Racing the Yamaha WR 155 at Rev Zone Hanoi: Time Trials, Water Crossings, and a Win

Recently, I headed to Rev Zone Yamaha’s event in Hanoi to take part in their time trial challenge. The format was simple: three different tracks, one bike, and the fastest overall lap time takes the win. The bike we raced? The Yamaha WR 155 — a lightweight dual-sport that’s become a popular entry-level choice for off-road riders in Vietnam.

The Three Tracks

The event was broken into three sections, each with its own unique challenges:

  • Track One – Motocross Style:
The first loop had a motocross feel with some jumps and rocky sections. A couple of doubles, slick corners, and flowing lines kept the pace quick but technical.

  • Track Two – Enduro Obstacles:
From there we transitioned into more enduro terrain — logs, rocks, and tighter lines. It wasn’t too extreme, but enough to keep you focused on body positioning and throttle control.

  • Track Three – The Water Track:
Then came the part I dreaded most: deep water. And not just puddles — we’re talking sections that swallowed the bike up to the seat, ruts hidden under the surface, and plenty of slippery sand. Honestly, I ride like a cat around water — I don’t like it. But, somehow, I pushed through.

On Track With the WR 155

The WR 155 handled the mix surprisingly well. On the motocross track it felt light and nimble, easy to flick through corners and soak up the jumps. On the enduro track, it carried me cleanly over logs and obstacles without drama.

The real test was the water. In the deepest sections, the bike spun and fought for grip, but by leaning back, staying calm, and keeping steady throttle, I made it through without getting stuck.

Crossing the Line

After battling through all three tracks, I finished with a time of around 3 minutes and 10 seconds. It felt faster in the moment, but either way, it was enough to secure the win in the time trial.

One of my favorite moments was scrubbing one of the jumps — not the cleanest scrub in the world, but it kept me low and flowing. nathan even called it “elegant,” which I’ll happily take.

Final Thoughts

The Rev Zone Yamaha event was a blast — a mix of motocross speed, enduro obstacles, and pure grit in the water track. Racing the WR 155 in Hanoi gave me a new appreciation for what this little bike can do. It’s not a full-sized enduro weapon, but it’s tough, versatile, and more capable than most people expect.

For me, the best part was not just winning the time trial, but getting the chance to ride, test myself, and share the track with a great group of people. Events like this show just how fun and accessible off-road riding in Vietnam can be.
