one day off-road e-bike tour

Exploring the Trails near Hanoi on the surron Ultra B eBike

We’re on tour in Soc son, just outside Hanoi. I’m riding the Ultra Bee, while Barry is on a lighter bike. Our goal today: test if the Ultra B can handle steep hill climbs on a rainy, wet day.

About the Tour

This tour takes place in Soc son, about 45 minutes from central Hanoi. It’s incredible how mountainous and peaceful this area is, considering how close it is to the hustle and bustle of Hanoi city.

The trails I’m riding with Barry on are intermediate level. Barry has quite a bit of riding experience, and I tailor my tours based on each customer’s skill level. For beginners, I stick to easy fire roads and avoid the more challenging trails if they’re struggling.

Comparing Bikes on the Trail

Though the ultra bee is small, it packs a punch—sharp brakes and solid performance. I have some expert-level trails too, for more experienced riders, but so far only a few customers have taken on those challenges. It would be great to have more riders ready to push their limits.

Barry’s lighter bike needed a bit more speed for some sections, but my Ultra B performed without needing any momentum.

Why eBikes Are Great for Beginners

It’s been raining, so we’ve been dealing with deep ruts, which adds to the fun. One reason I encourage using eBikes on these tours is that they’re incredibly capable machines. They’re perfect for beginners or riders who aren’t comfortable with manual clutches or gear changes.

With an eBike, you can focus entirely on the trail and your riding skills instead of worrying about shifting gears. It feels a lot like riding a mountain bike, but with an engine and better suspension. Definitely worth trying.

Getting Away from Hanoi

After spending time in Hanoi, many people get tired of the noise, pollution, and crowded streets. This tour offers a quick escape: just 45 minutes to the mountains, fresh air, and beautiful nature.

If you enjoy wildlife, green landscapes, and peaceful trails, this tour will suit you perfectly. Personally, I enjoy riding fast more than identifying plants or animals, but whatever your style, this tour has something for everyone.

Final Thoughts

Barry’s bike might be slower, but he still keeps up well. There’s no shame in taking it easy sometimes—the challenge is part of the experience.

The current trend might favor the biggest, most powerful adventure bikes, but for off-road trails like these, a light bike is often best. It’s easier to control and get out of tricky situations, yet powerful enough to have fun.

After the ride, we returned to Gizzy Lakehouse to load up the bikes and enjoy a well-earned lunch.
