Four day off-road tour in north vietnam
Exploring Remote Vietnam on Two Wheels: A Journey Through Hills, Villages, and Waterfalls
Our latest off-road tour took an adventurous Californian rider, Hayden, deep into the most remote and scenic corners of northern Vietnam. This wasn’t just a ride—it was an immersive cultural and natural experience that showcased the heart of the country, from rugged hill climbs to spontaneous dance shows.
Arrival, Fish, and Some Unexpected Entertainment
We wrapped up the day’s ride around 6:00 PM, arriving at our hotel just in time to admire the fish pond and shake off the dust with a quick shower. After freshening up, we went in search of dinner—and were greeted by an overwhelming amount of noise coming from the TV, which had to be turned off before we could hear ourselves think.
Just as we were winding down, we stumbled across a traditional Vietnamese dance performance. Of course, we had to check it out. The evening ended with a round of pool against some local kids. Despite getting soundly beaten, we walked away with a technical victory after they accidentally pocketed the white ball. We’ll take the win!
From Ta xua to Tram tau
The following morning, we kicked off our journey from Ta xua to Tram tau. Early into the ride, we passed through a friendly little village, where locals came out to wave as we rode by. It’s these small moments that make touring rural Vietnam so special.
Hayden had started to feel that the trails were getting a bit too easy—so naturally, we took a little detour. The trail we found wasn’t exactly on the original route, but it delivered the challenge he was asking for. Judging by the looks afterward… let’s just say it was more than he bargained for.
Coffee on the Rice Fields & Local Hospitality
As we arrived in Tram tau, I found a peaceful coffee spot nestled beside a rice paddy. The view was stunning, the coffee relaxing, and—true to Vietnamese hospitality—we quickly found ourselves surrounded by locals.
One of my favorite things about Vietnam is the culture of sharing. When you sit with locals, expect to share drinks and food—and expect it to be encouraged strongly. One kind mother was so enthusiastic with her cheers, she accidentally smashed her glass during the toast!
Testing the WR155’s and Some Unexpected Cliffside Drama
After coffee, we hit the trails again and decided it was time to find out how fast these WR155s could really go. It became more of a friendly (and slightly competitive) test of speed than a casual trail ride.
At one point, Hayden nearly had a close call near a cliffside drop. Naturally, I did what any responsible guide would do—I made sure he was alright… by confidently overtaking him. 😄
To be fair, this was probably the fastest I’ve ridden these trails with a guest. Huge thanks to Tiget Motorbikes for providing such solid machines and access to these routes.
Soaking in the Hot Springs and an Unexpected New Companion
After a challenging ride, we treated ourselves to a soak in the hot springs of Tram tau. With frogs chirping through the night, it was supposed to be the perfect way to unwind. though I can’t say everyone found the frog symphony quite as soothing.
We also met Mikel from Denmark, who was traveling solo. Naturally, we invited him along for the next leg of the trip. It’s amazing how many interesting people you meet on the road.
Off-Roading to the Waterfall
Before reaching the waterfall, we rode along an incredibly scenic road—only to find ourselves diverted by yet another off-road trail. The ride down toward the falls was beautiful but slippery, with Hayden taking a spill after getting distracted by a buffalo.
Despite a couple of crashes and a PG-rated amount of chaos, we made it to a stunning waterfall tucked away in the hills. It was one of those hidden gems you only find when you’re willing to go off the beaten path.
Finishing with Tea Fields and That Feeling of Home
We wrapped up the adventure with a gentle ride through rolling tea fields, the perfect peaceful end to a thrilling tour. As a Brit, I have to admit—there’s something incredibly comforting about being surrounded by endless rows of tea leaves lol.
Final Thoughts
This tour had a bit of everything—challenging trails, cultural moments, fast riding, and unexpected friendships. Whether it was showing off a wheelie for the village kids or laughing over a shattered glass of beer, it reminded us why off-road travel in Vietnam is about so much more than just the ride.
