Descending steep terrain is one of the most intimidating challenges for new and intermediate riders. At Dirt Bike Academy Vietnam, we regularly teach safe downhill riding techniques during our off-road motorbike lessons in Hanoi.
While your instincts might tell you to push the bike or keep the engine off, this often leads to less control, not more. Here's how to safely ride down steep hills using proper body position, braking, and throttle management — the same methods we teach in our Hanoi enduro training.
1. Start the Engine — Always
One of the most common mistakes we see? Riders switch off the engine and coast down hills using only their brakes. While this might seem safer in extreme terrain, in most situations it actually removes a valuable tool: engine braking.
If the surface isn’t overly rocky or slippery, stay on the bike with the engine running. Use the engine brake to help control your speed alongside the front and rear brakes. This will give you much more stability and precision.
2. Ease Out the Clutch
Once the engine is on, gently release the clutch. This engages the engine brake, allowing it to slow you down naturally. Think of it as an extra layer of braking that doesn’t rely on your fingers or foot — and it won’t overheat or lock up.
3. Balance Front and Rear Brakes
You should use both brakes when descending, but here’s the key:
Favor the rear brake.
Avoid grabbing the front brake too hard.
Too much front brake on a descent can cause the front wheel to lock or tuck, and in some cases, you may go over the handlebars. Keep your braking smooth and progressive, with slightly more pressure applied to the rear brake.
4. Foot Position: Control and Stability
Foot placement is often overlooked, but it makes a big difference in control:
Left foot: Ball of the foot on the peg. This allows you to squeeze the bike with your legs and maintain stability.
Right foot: Ball of the foot on the peg, heel on the rear brake pedal. This gives you fine control over rear braking without shifting your weight awkwardly.
5. Body Position: Stay Back, Stay Balanced
Body positioning on steep downhills is critical.
Move your hips back — get your weight toward the rear of the bike to reduce pressure on the front wheel.
Head position: Keep your head slightly behind the handlebars, not all the way back.
Arms bent: This allows for better control of the handlebars and keeps you responsive to terrain changes.
Too much weight forward can cause a front-end washout. Too far back, and you’ll lose handlebar control. Find that balanced sweet spot — hips back, head neutral, arms relaxed.
6. Descend Smoothly and in Control
When everything comes together — engine braking, proper foot placement, smooth braking, and correct posture — you’ll glide down even the steepest hills with confidence and control.
This is exactly the kind of technique we focus on during our motorbike lessons in Hanoi, especially in the technical downhill sections of our Hanoi enduro trails.
